| The mission
of the Black Media Foundation, Inc. (BMF) is to increase the number
of voices in the fabric of America. BMF does this in two ways: It
improves the level of communication arts skills in communities outside
the so-called mainstream and increases the amount of storytelling
about these communities.
BMF assists
students in developing their skills in the communication arts fields
including creative writing, newspaper, video, and web production.
To carry this out, BMF works with all youth, in particular, the
disadvantaged.
BMF seeks to
recapture the lost and emerging stories from communities outside
the mainstream and views this work as critical for these communities.
An outlet for
cultural expression is necessary for legitimizing the thoughts and
the feelings that are particular to such communities. Legitimizing
these voices gives them authority, placing them on equal footing
with the myriad of voices that make up the fabric of American society.
The authentication of these disparate voices advances the communities
they represent and the nation as a whole.
